Job summary

We are seeking a dedicated Peer Support Specialist to join our Raleigh/Durham team and use their lived experience to inspire hope and support others on their recovery journeys.

About The Role

The Peer Support Specialist will provide direct recovery services to adults diagnosed with a mental health or substance use disorder. This role includes structured skill-building, mentoring, advocacy, and linkage to community resources, while modeling self-determination and healthy recovery skills. The position works under the immediate supervision of the Peer Support Services Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities
  • Acting as a role model to individuals in recovery and sharing lived experience to inspire hope.
  • Supporting individuals at risk of relapse or symptom exacerbation through recovery education and appropriate interventions.
  • Modeling recovery processes and demonstrating effective coping skills.
  • Assisting individuals with managing symptoms and using natural supports and community resources.
  • Providing services in both 1:1 and group settings.
  • Completing accurate progress notes and records in a timely manner.
  • Helping individuals identify strengths, abilities, and goals to create person-centered recovery plans.
  • Assisting clients with issues such as housing, natural support systems, job readiness, and skill development.
  • Exploring and connecting individuals to community resources, including self-help groups.
  • Advocating for clients and intervening in crisis or emergency situations as necessary.
  • Providing information to clients and families about available services and making referrals as appropriate.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Personal Characteristics
  • Self-identified as a person in recovery with lived experience.
  • Understanding of multiple recovery pathways and commitment to recovery principles (e.g., AA, NA).
  • Ability to participate in required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Strong individual and group engagement skills.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and linguistic factors relevant to recovery populations.
  • CPR-First Aid, NCI, and other required trainings prior to employment.
  • Knowledge of community resources including mental health, medical, social services, and legal systems.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license and insurability under agency policy.
  • Emotional stability, maturity, warmth, openness, and ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Adherence to the NC Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics and Values.
Minimum Qualifications

As stated in the job description:

  • Certification by the NC Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board or certification by another state as a Peer Support Specialist (eligible for NC certification).
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of Peer Support Services–related experience.
Working Conditions
  • Office-based role with potential delivery of remote peer support services.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods may be necessary.
Compensation

Compensation is based on educational background and years of Peer Support field experience.
