PEDIATRIC FEEDING DISORDERS PSYCHOLOGIST

The Pediatric Feeding Disorders Psychologist is responsible for providing comprehensive psychological services to children, adolescents, and families with pediatric feeding disorders. Responsibilities include psychological assessment, therapeutic intervention, consultation, interdisciplinary collaboration, education, and supervision of psychology trainees.
The psychologist will participate in Mt Washington Pediatric Hospital’s nationally renowned Pediatric Feeding Day Treatment Program and associated feeding clinics. The psychologist will also maintain an outpatient clinical caseload and may provide services in an additional area of clinical interest or expertise based on the needs of the Division and hospital.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION

• Provides comprehensive psychological assessment and therapeutic intervention to children, adolescents, and families with pediatric feeding disorders through the Feeding Day Treatment Program and associated feeding clinics.
• Works as part of a multidisciplinary team that may include physicians, psychologists, dietitians, nurses, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and other health care professionals.
• Demonstrates clinical expertise in working with children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, including an understanding of the relationship between autism and pediatric feeding difficulties.
• Provides evidence-based psychological and behavioral interventions addressing feeding difficulties, behavioral concerns, anxiety, emotional regulation, and other psychological factors that may affect feeding and nutritional development.
• Provides clinical supervision and training to psychology externs, interns, and postdoctoral fellows in the assessment and treatment of pediatric feeding disorders.
• Participates in the education and professional development of trainees and staff regarding pediatric feeding disorders, autism spectrum disorder, psychological assessment, behavioral intervention, and related clinical topics.
• Maintains an outpatient clinical caseload consistent with the needs of the Division and hospital.
• May provide psychological services in an additional area of clinical interest or expertise outside of pediatric feeding disorders, based on the psychologist’s training and expertise and the needs of the Division.
• Participates in Division administrative functions, program development, multidisciplinary case consultation, and collaboration with community providers and referral sources.
• Participates in other clinical, educational, and administrative activities consistent with the needs of the Division and hospital.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Educational Requirements

• Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an American Psychological Association-approved professional psychology program.
• Specific graduate and/or postdoctoral training and clinical experience in pediatric feeding disorders preferred.
• Postdoctoral fellowship in clinical child or pediatric psychology preferred.

Licensure, Certification and Registration

• Licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist in the State of Maryland.
• Additional specialized training or certification in pediatric feeding disorders, behavioral intervention, autism spectrum disorder, or related areas is preferred.

Work Orientation and Experience / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with pediatric feeding disorders.
• Training and experience working with children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.
• Knowledge of the developmental, behavioral, psychological, and family factors that contribute to pediatric feeding difficulties.
• Demonstrated ability to provide psychological assessment and evidence-based behavioral and therapeutic interventions.
• Ability to function effectively within a multidisciplinary pediatric treatment team.
• Ability to provide effective clinical supervision and training to psychology trainees.
• Strong communication, consultation, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with children and families presenting with complex medical, developmental, behavioral, and psychological needs.
• Willingness and ability to maintain an outpatient clinical caseload.
• Flexibility to provide clinical services in an area outside of pediatric feeding disorders when needed and when consistent with the psychologist’s training and expertise.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO ASSIGNED AREA

Participation in the Pediatric Feeding Day Treatment Program and associated pediatric feeding clinics is an expected component of the position.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Supervision Received

Reports to the Division Director.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

• Directly communicates with patients, family members, trainees, physicians, psychologists, dietitians, nurses, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, other health care team members, health system staff, and representatives of referring agencies, community providers, and payors.
• Must be able to establish effective therapeutic and professional relationships with children and families and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary treatment environment. Must be able to manage complex clinical situations and communicate effectively and professionally with patients, families, trainees, and colleagues.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT USED

Uses electronic health information systems, personal computer, telephone, and various psychological assessment instruments and other clinical tools relevant to the assessment and treatment of pediatric feeding disorders.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS

• Typical health care environment. Occasional stress due to multiple demands, shifting priorities, changing patient populations, and tight time frames.
• Periodically serves as an on-call psychologist during evening and weekend hours.
• Limited risk of exposure to body fluids, infectious waste, or blood-borne diseases.
• Employees are expected to exercise good judgment in the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to established protocols.
