LICENSED PSYCHOLOGIST JOB SUMMARY

The Pediatric Trauma Psychologist is responsible for providing comprehensive psychological services to children, adolescents, and families who have experienced or been impacted by pediatric trauma. Responsibilities include trauma-focused psychological assessment, evidence-based therapeutic intervention, consultation, education, and collaboration with multidisciplinary treatment teams.

The psychologist will serve as a clinical resource in the area of pediatric trauma and will contribute to the development and advancement of trauma-informed services within the Division and hospital.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION

• Provides comprehensive psychological assessment and therapeutic intervention to children, adolescents, and families with a focus on pediatric trauma and trauma-related conditions.
• Conducts trauma-focused clinical assessments and demonstrates fluency in the administration, scoring, interpretation, and clinical application of established trauma assessment measures.
• Provides evidence-based, trauma-focused interventions, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and/or other well-established trauma-focused treatment approaches.
• Provides consultation to physicians, psychologists, therapists, social workers, nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary team regarding the psychological impact of trauma and appropriate trauma-focused interventions.
• Supervises and provides clinical training to psychology trainees at the extern, internship, and postdoctoral fellowship levels in the assessment and treatment of pediatric trauma.
• Participates in the education and professional development of trainees and staff regarding pediatric trauma assessment, evidence-based treatment, trauma-informed care, and the use of trauma-specific measures.
• Participates in other clinical, educational, and administrative activities consistent with the needs of the Division and hospital.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Educational Requirements

• Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an American Psychological Association-approved professional psychology program.
• Specific graduate and/or postdoctoral training and clinical experience in pediatric trauma assessment and intervention.
• Postdoctoral fellowship in clinical child or pediatric psychology preferred.

Licensure, Certification and Registration

• Licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist in the State of Maryland.
• Training and/or certification in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, or another established trauma-focused treatment modality preferred.

Work Orientation and Experience / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated clinical expertise in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents who have experienced trauma.
• Demonstrated knowledge of child and adolescent development and the ways in which trauma may affect psychological, behavioral, emotional, and developmental functioning.
• Fluency with established pediatric trauma assessment measures, including the ability to select appropriate measures and integrate results into clinical assessment and treatment planning.
• Demonstrated competency in evidence-based trauma-focused interventions.
• Ability to provide effective clinical supervision and training to psychology externs, interns, and postdoctoral fellows in pediatric trauma assessment and treatment.
• Strong communication, consultation, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and respond appropriately to complex and sensitive clinical situations.

Other Requirements Specific to Assigned Area

• Participation in supervision and training of psychology trainees at the extern, internship, and postdoctoral fellowship levels is an expected component of the position.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Directly communicates with patients, family members, other health care team members, health system staff, trainees, and representatives of referring agencies, community providers, and payors. Must be able to establish effective therapeutic and professional relationships and handle crisis, trauma-related, and other sensitive situations in a professional and compassionate manner.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT USED

Uses electronic health information systems, personal computer, telephone, and various psychological assessment instruments and trauma-specific assessment measures.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical health care environment. Occasional stress due to multiple demands, shifting priorities, changing patient populations, and tight time frames. Periodically serves as an on-call psychologist during evening and weekend hours. Limited risk of exposure to body fluids, infectious waste, or blood-borne diseases. Employees are expected to exercise good judgment in the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to established protocols.

Child Psychologist, Trauma and Healing Program

Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital's Division of Behavioral Health is seeking a Child Psychologist with expertise or specialized interest in trauma-informed care to join our growing Trauma and Healing Program.

The psychologist will provide comprehensive assessment and treatment services to children and adolescents who have experienced trauma, including abuse, neglect, medical trauma, and other adverse life experiences. Clinical responsibilities will include evidence-based trauma-focused interventions, psychological assessment, consultation, and collaboration with multidisciplinary medical and rehabilitation teams.

In addition to direct clinical service, the psychologist will provide supervision and training to psychology externs, interns, and, when appropriate, postdoctoral fellows. The position also includes consultation to hospital programs and providers regarding pediatric trauma, trauma-informed care, and the psychological impact of adverse experiences on children and families.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Clinical, Counseling, or School Psychology from an APA-accredited program.
• Specialized training and experience in pediatric psychology and/or trauma-informed care preferred.
• Training and experience in evidence-based trauma treatments, such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), EMDR, or related interventions, preferred.
• Licensed psychologist in Maryland or license-eligible in Maryland at the time of application, internship completion, or fellowship completion.
• Strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, teaching, supervision, and program development.
