The role involves performing daily clinical operations of Echocardiography, including performing echocardiograms, entering preliminary interpretations, and covering all sites and shifts, including call coverage.
Level I: Demonstrates proficiency by performing routine and emergency echocardiograms, including 2D, 3D, Doppler, Transesophageal, and Stress Echocardiograms, as requested by physicians and in accordance with standard practices. Provides echocardiography services at all necessary locations, working variable shifts, weekends, and providing emergent call coverage as scheduled. Operates equipment necessary for all procedures, maintains equipment, and performs routine cleaning and preventive maintenance. Analyzes patient medical records, prepares preliminary reports for review by Cardiologists, and participates in quality improvement activities. Maintains confidentiality and instructs students, fellows, nurses, or health personnel as requested. Attends meetings and participates in conferences for professional growth.
Level II: Actively participates in patient testing, performs advanced cardiac ultrasound services, assists physicians with complex procedures, and acts as a resource and preceptor for other sonographers. Supports department objectives and quality assurance initiatives.
Level III: Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound services, functions as an expert resource, ensures quality assurance, and maintains accreditation standards. Provides education and case reviews, collaborates on policy updates, and supports departmental accreditation efforts.
Graduate or completion of an eligible program, or current certification in echocardiography. Experience requirements vary by level, from none beyond education to a minimum of 2-4 years in the specialty modality.
ARDMS/CCI certification in Echocardiography, BLS certification, with additional certifications required within specified timeframes.
