Department of Pediatrics is comprised of 13 Pediatric Specialty groups as well as 3 General Pediatric Practices who hold clinics at 5 main clinical locations and outreach locations throughout the state of Arizona and in partnership with the Banner Diamond Children’s Medical Center. The Department employs over 300 clinical and research staff as well as over 100 faculty members serving the Pediatric populations in the Tucson, Sierra Vista, Douglas and Nogales areas.


The Department of Pediatrics supports the Academic mission in partnership with the University of Arizona through our residency and medical student programs as well as research funding through our philanthropic partner the Steel Children’s Foundation.

The BUMG Wilmot Children’s Multi-Specialty Clinic houses our Pediatric Primary Care and 11 Pediatric Subspecialty Services including Adolescent Medicine, Allergy, Cardiology, Developmental, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Pain Management, and Pulmonology, offering a wide range of diversity and opportunity for growth and learning.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position independently performs the most complex echocardiography studies for the diagnosis of heart disease in the pediatric population and congenital heart disease in adult patients. This position performs in accordance with department/facility policies, procedures and protocols. This position ensures optimal care/treatment to patient population. This position may provide these services in multiple locations as designated by department scope.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  1. Independently performs echocardiograms on pediatric and adult patients with complex congenital heart disease utilizing department specific protocols. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient being served. May perform extra modalities such as fetal (holds registry in appropriate fetal echocardiography credential) or 3D echocardiograms.
  2. Records, interrogates, quantifies, and measures both the presence of normal and abnormal anatomy or physiology in a manner consistent with approved standards. Independently produces high quality images and prepares/presents them with other pertinent patient information for timely interpretation. Prepares and maintains accurate preliminary reports and documentation.
  3. Performs procedures by following and verifying referring providers’ orders. Uses independent judgment and applies learned methodologies according to established policy and procedures. Participates in ongoing quality improvement processes including application and/or maintenance of accreditation requirements of lab.
  4. Participates in the educational objectives of the pediatric echocardiography laboratory, including effectively mentoring or precepting other sonographers, students or other trainees. Educates patients/families regarding procedure and/or treatment to be performed. Demonstrates professional behavior/conduct in all interactions; fosters teamwork, efficient use of resources and quality patient outcomes.
  5. Demonstrates competence, at a highly proficient level, in assisting with invasive/interventional and intraoperative procedures in accordance with established practices.
  6. Performs and evaluates equipment quality control measurements and maintenance requirements. Demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot and notifies appropriate personnel to repair or maintain equipment performance. Maintains a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors. Adheres to safety policies.
  7. Accountable for the ethical, legal, professional and certification responsibilities related to the practice. This includes maintaining confidentiality of all work information.
  8. Assures the efficient operation of workflow of the department. Ability to perform daily team lead function, as assigned. Monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and material to ensure non-interruption of services.
  9. Independently performs prescribed procedures in accordance with department/facility policies, procedures and protocols to patients. Internal customers include all levels of medical imaging and nursing management and staff, medical staff, and all other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. External customers include regulatory and health agencies, patients, and family members.

Requires national certification in the area of specialty from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer in Pediatric Echocardiography (RDCS-PE), or a Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS). BLS certification required.

This position requires clinical knowledge typically achieved with a minimum of three years of experience in pediatric echocardiography. Must demonstrate effective communication skills, human relations skills, analyze data and solve problems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Current or recent (past 12 months) experience in a cardiac critical care setting as a Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer is preferred.
