Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health's Children\'s Specialized Hospital is seeking a Recreation Assistant to support adapted recreation programs for children and youths with special needs. You will work under supervision to coordinate activities and promote participation, with opportunities across aquatics, camps and evening programs.

The role emphasizes teamwork with a Recreational Therapist or certified instructor, and requires a high school diploma, AHA BLS certification, and a driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; must obtain within six months if not at hire.
  • AHA BLS Provider certification required.
  • Experience: Previous work with children required; experience with children with special needs preferred.
  • License: Valid driver's license required.
  • Knowledge of childhood development and developmental disabilities; ability to plan activities and adapt environments; manage challenging behaviors.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and implementing adapted recreation programs.
  • Prepare and set up programs, organize equipment and schedules.
  • Support adapted activities (aquatics, martial arts, camps, evening recreation, social activities).
  • Adapt activities and environments for various abilities.
  • Maintain safety and a positive, inclusive environment.
  • Communicate with participants, families, volunteers, and staff.
