Job summary

Bryan Health in Nebraska seeks a dedicated Registered Nurse to provide direct and indirect patient care in the Progressive Care Unit. The role involves monitoring patients, communicating changes to physicians, and ensuring patient safety through meticulous clinical practice.

You will participate in performance improvement activities, support ongoing education, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to optimize outcomes for patients in serious condition.

Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or current enrollment program preferred.
  • Must provide evidence of certification and/or instruction for practice areas as required by State or Federal standards/regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates with physicians about changes in patient's clinical condition.
  • Performs cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias, and treats per ACLS protocol.
  • Assesses and cares for patients in the post anesthesia period in PACU and ICU.
  • Formulates an individualized plan of care and revises it based on patient response.
  • Performs bedside reports at shift change and conducts hourly rounding.
  • Maintains documentation in line with current standards and participates in CQI activities.
  • Precepts new personnel and supports orientation and professional development.

Job description

Summary

Provides direct and indirect patient care in the progressive care setting. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient's clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Performs general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement and CQI activities.

  2. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  3. Assesses and cares for patients in the post anesthesia period both in the PACU and ICU.
  4. Performs cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias, and treats appropriately based upon ACLS protocol.
  5. Adequately assesses and reassesses pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  6. Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  7. Formulates an individualized plan of care, revises plan as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluates overall plan daily for effectiveness.
  8. Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  9. Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers, and physicians.
  10. Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
  11. Coordinates and supervises patient care, as necessary.
  12. Assists physicians with procedures both in the ICU and other departments.
  13. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  14. Functions as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  15. Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  16. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  17. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  18. Meets current standards and policies in documentation.
  19. Participates in performance improvement activities.
  20. Performs waived testing (point-of-care testing), interprets results of waived tests and takes appropriate action on waived test results.
  21. Performs bedside reports on patients at shift change; this includes any handoff of patient care.
  22. Performs purposeful hourly rounding on all patients assigned.
  23. Provides morning/evening care which may include brushing teeth, showering/bathing patients, peri care, foley catheter cares, and denture care.
  24. Assists in orientation and/or acts as a preceptor for new personnel.
  25. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in the field of expertise.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing or current enrollment program preferred. Must provide evidence of certification and/or instruction for practice areas as required by State or Federal standards/regulations. Minimum of one (1) year of Progressive Care Unit experience preferred.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Exam (NIHSS) are required within 6 months of employment.
