Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assign basic CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 codes for PB services.
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards.
  • Review documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Learn coding policies, payer requirements, and compliance guidelines.
  • Assist in preparing coding queries for providers.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality per HIPAA.
  • Participate in training, audits, and feedback sessions.
  • Escalate complex cases to senior coders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Applies knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines to assign codes for outpatient and physician services. Ensures accuracy and compliance with organizational policies, payer requirements, and regulatory standards. Develops foundational coding skills through training, mentoring, and supervised practice.

Essential Functions
  • Assigns basic CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 to PB service with low-level of complexity.
  • Maintains consistent achievement of departmental productivity and quality standards.
  • Reviews medical documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Learns organizational coding policies, payer requirements, and compliance guidelines.
  • Assists in preparing coding queries for providers when clarification is needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information and adheres to HIPAA.
  • Participates in coding training, audits, and feedback sessions to build competency.
  • Escalates complex cases to senior coders or coding leadership.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirement:

High school diploma or equivalent; coursework in medical terminology and anatomy required

Experience Requirement:

0–2 years of healthcare or coding experience (externship, internship, or training program acceptable). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. All experience must be paid and in the same related field. Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week. Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.

Certifications & Licensures:

Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based (CCS-P) or equivalent required.
