Job summary

The Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs seeks a Payroll Officer 1 to join the Payroll Unit in Rocky Hill. This full-time, first-shift role runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, handling accurate payroll processing, garnishments, and benefits administration for state employees.

The position requires strong payroll knowledge, supervisory ability, and experience with payroll software such as PeopleSoft CORE and UKG Pro.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience in complex clerical work in accounting or payroll.
• Two years of general experience must have payroll preparation as the principal responsibility.
• College training may substitute for experience (15 semester hours = 1/2 year up to 2 years).
• Preferred: experience with payroll software including PeopleSoft CORE and UKG Pro.
• Experience processing payroll, medical, dental and group life benefits.
• Experience applying state and agency regulations to payroll.
• Experience compiling and analyzing benefits and payroll data.
• Experience preparing reports on benefits and payroll data.
• Experience independently managing assigned work responsibilities.
• Experience leading and training assigned staff.
• Experience identifying problems, researching solutions, and implementing corrective action.
• Experience managing competing priorities while meeting deadlines.
• Experience providing customer service to diverse populations.

Responsibilities

• Schedules and oversees payroll staff performance.
• Supervises complex payroll tasks including retroactive payments and garnishments.
• Oversees payroll deductions and coding accuracy.
• Manages time records and leave balances.
• Maintains paychecks distribution and responds to payroll inquiries.
• Compiles payroll data for budget preparation.
• Provides benefits paperwork processing.
