Payroll Specialist – Contract

A leading global mining company is seeking a Payroll Specialist to join its team in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional to join a dynamic, collaborative organization and gain valuable experience supporting U.S. and Canadian payroll operations.
This is a contract position through January 2027, with the potential for future growth and opportunities based on business needs and performance.
Position Details
- Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
- Work Arrangement: Onsite with opportunity to work hybrid after training

What You’ll DoAs a Payroll Specialist, you will support the processing of bi-weekly payroll for employees in both the United States and Canada. You’ll work as part of a collaborative payroll team and assist with a variety of payroll, tax, reconciliation, and reporting responsibilities.
Responsibilities include:
- Process accurate and timely bi-weekly payroll for U.S. and Canadian employees
- Remit payroll tax payments and assist with payroll tax filings
- Manage and process union payments
- Process on‑demand payroll payments
- Assist with payroll reconciliation questions and research payroll General Ledger (GL) accounts
- Review payroll information for accuracy and identify discrepancies
- Communicate professionally with employees, Human Resources, benefits specialists, managers, banks, credit merchants, and state and federal agencies
- Prepare, run, and distribute monthly payroll reports
- Apply company policies and procedures to assigned payroll responsibilities
- Research and resolve payroll-related questions and issues
- Manage individual workload effectively to meet payroll deadlines and business objectives
- Maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality when handling sensitive payroll information
What We're Looking ForThe ideal candidate will have hands‑on payroll processing experience, strong Excel skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
Required Qualifications:- 2+ years of payroll processing experience
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent organization and time‑management skills
- Ability to multitask and prioritize competing deadlines
- Strong computer and technical skills
- Positive attitude and professional, friendly demeanor
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees and internal departments
- Team‑oriented approach and ability to work collaboratively
Preferred Qualifications:- Associate degree in Accounting or a related field
- Experience with SAP
- Payroll auditing experience
- Experience processing payroll for a large or complex organization
- Experience supporting organizations with 2,000+ employees
- Working knowledge of payroll laws, regulations, benefits, and payroll taxes
- Experience with U.S. and/or Canadian payroll
