Operational Payroll Specialist
Location: Golden, CO (Onsite with hybrid potential)
Schedule: Full-Time | Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM
Pay Rate: $30.00 – $36.00 / hour (DOE)

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Operational Payroll Specialist to support time & labor processing and complex payroll operations for a premier public sector organization in Golden, CO. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, managing specialized deductions, and delivering exceptional support to organization staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the accurate and timely processing of complex, high-volume payroll transactions, timekeeping records, and labor allocations.
- Ensure strict adherence to federal and state labor laws, organizational policies, tax regulations, and governing agreements.
- Manage specialized payroll administration, including retirement programs, garnishments, child support orders, tax liens, voluntary deductions, and workers' compensation payments.
- Partner collaboratively with internal teams (Accounting, Risk Management) and external entities (state retirement systems, judicial courts, social services, and tax agencies).
- Research, troubleshoot, and resolve payroll discrepancies while maintaining strict confidentiality of sensitive records.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to respond to employee inquiries and optimize operational documentation.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 3–5 years of dedicated end-to-end payroll processing experience.
- Industry Background: Experience in K-12, higher education, or public sector payroll environment highly preferred.
- Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with large-scale HRIS/ERP systems (PeopleSoft preferred) and strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with Colorado PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association), Form 990 reporting, and state/federal tax compliance preferred.
- Certifications: Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation is a strong plus.
- Skills: Strong analytical problem-solving, high attention to detail, clear communication, and excellent customer service capabilities.
