Job summary

Strata Clean Energy is seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Manager to oversee our payroll operations from the Durham, NC headquarters. You will ensure accurate bi-weekly and monthly payroll, tax compliance, and timely employee support.

The role requires 5+ years of payroll experience, proficiency with payroll software (UKG Pro preferred), and strong analytical and organizational skills to optimize processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, HR or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of payroll processing experience with knowledge of payroll laws.
  • Proficiency in payroll software and Excel; UKG Pro experience a plus.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Process bi-weekly and monthly payroll accurately for all employees.
  • Manage payroll-related tax matters and multi-state withholding setups.
  • Prepare year-end forms such as W-2 and 1095-C with IRS compliance.
  • Maintain payroll records and respond to employee inquiries professionally.
  • Support reporting, reconciliation, and system improvements in payroll.

Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Payroll Manager to oversee our payroll operations. This position will be responsible for managing the entire payroll process, ensuring compliance with all federal and state regulations, and addressing employee payroll inquiries. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills and a thorough understanding of payroll systems and tax regulations.

Position is full-time, in-office at our Durham NC headquarters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Payroll Processing: Accurately process bi-weekly/monthly payroll for all employees, ensuring timely and correct payments.
  • Tax Compliance: Manage all payroll-related tax matters, including setting up new states for withholding and unemployment and addressing all tax notices.
  • State Compliance: Ensure adherence to state laws regarding payroll, including wage and hour regulations.
  • Deductions Management: Administer payroll deductions, including child support and employee wage garnishments, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Tax Forms Preparation: Prepare and distribute W-2 forms and 1095-C forms at year-end, ensuring accuracy and compliance with IRS guidelines.
  • Reporting: Assist the accounting department with payroll reports, inquiries, and reconciliation of payroll-related accounts.
  • Employee Support: Address and resolve employee payroll concerns and questions in a timely and professional manner.
  • System Management: Maintain and update payroll systems to improve efficiency and accuracy in payroll processing.
  • Documentation: Ensure all payroll processes are documented and maintain thorough records for auditing purposes.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices within the payroll function.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of payroll processing experience, with knowledge of payroll laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in payroll software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels.
  • Experience working in any payroll software is required; experience in UKG Pro is a plus.
  • Knowledge of multi-state payroll processing is a plus.
