Job summary

Hilo Benioff Medical Center is seeking a detail-oriented Pre Audit Clerk to support payroll operations for the East Hawaii Region. You will audit, calculate, and process payroll transactions, ensure accuracy, and maintain confidential employee records for nearly 2,000 staff.

The role requires clerical payroll experience and familiarity with payroll systems; exposure to collective bargaining agreements is a plus.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of general clerical experience with arithmetic and recordkeeping.
  • 2 years of clerical payroll processing or preparation of vouchers/invoices.
  • 1 year of pre-audit experience for completeness, accuracy, legality and propriety.

Responsibilities

Join the Payroll team at Hilo Benioff Medical Center and play a vital role in ensuring employees across the East Hawaii Region are paid accurately and on time. In this Pre Audit Clerk position, you will directly support the financial integrity of the organization while providing essential service to nearly 2,000 employees. Your attention to detail and commitment to compliance will help maintain trust and operational excellence across the healthcare system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Audit, calculate, and process payroll transactions including overtime, differentials, and leave in compliance with federal, state, and union regulations
  • Review and edit payroll data in the UKG Time and Attendance System, ensuring accuracy and resolving discrepancies with supervisors and staff
  • Prepare payroll adjustments and supporting documentation for overpayments, deductions, and reimbursements
  • Maintain and audit payroll records, including leave balances, payroll registers, and employee files
  • Assist employees and departments with payroll-related inquiries, forms, and wage verification requests
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and collective bargaining agreements while maintaining strict confidentiality
Required Qualifications

To qualify, one must meet all of the following requirements. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour workweek.

Experience
  • One (1) year of general clerical experience demonstrating knowledge of arithmetic, recordkeeping, and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Two (2) years of clerical experience in payroll processing and/or preparation of vouchers, invoices, or financial statements. Payroll experience is preferred.
  • For the Pre-Audit II level, an additional one (1) year of pre-audit experience is required, including progressively responsible work experience which involved the examination and verification of invoices, vouchers, statements and other requests for payment for completeness, accuracy, legality and propriety.
Substitutions Allowed
Substitution of Education for Experience
  • 1.Graduation from high school may be substituted for one half (1/2) year of General Experience.
  • 2.Successful completion of a substantially full-time equivalent clerical, stenographic or secretarial curriculum leading to a degree, diploma or a certificate of achievement at an accredited community college; or at a business or technical school which included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general clerical procedures, and office machines may substituted for the one (1) year of General Experience provided the duration of the training was for a year or more.
  • 3.Successful completion of a substantially full-time equivalent clerical, stenographic or secretarial curriculum leading to a degree, diploma or a certificate of achievement at an accredited community college, business or technical school which was for a period of less than (one) 1 year may be substituted for General Experience on a month-for-month basis provided the training included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general clerical procedures and office machines.
  • 4.Successful completion of half a school year of substantially full-time clerical, stenographic or secretarial curriculum at an accredited community college, business and/or technical school which included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general clerical procedures and office machines, may be substituted for six (6) months of General Experience.
  • 5.Successful completion of one (1) school year (of a program of more than one year in length) of substantially full-time clerical, stenographic or secretarial curriculum at an accredited community college, business and/or technical school which included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general clerical procedures and office machines, may be substituted for one (1) year of General Experience.
  • 6.Successful completion of substantially full-time equivalent bookkeeping or accounting curriculum leading to a degree or diploma at an accredited business school, community college, or other comparable institution which included accounting courses may be substituted for the General Experience or the Specialized Experience on the basis of one (1) year of such training for one (1) year of experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years of General or Specialized Experience.
  • 7.Successful completion of one (1) school year of (more than one year program) a substantially full-time accounting curriculum which normally leads to a degree or diploma at an accredited business school, community college, or other comparable institution which included accounting courses may be substituted for one (1) year of General or Specialized Experience.
  • 8.Education in an accredited university in a baccalaureate program with courses in English composition and college mathematics may be substituted for experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours for six (6) months of General Experience, up to a maximum of one (1) year of General Experience.
  • 9.Education in an accredited university in a baccalaureate program may be substituted for experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours for six (6) months of Specialized Experience, provided the fifteen (15) semester hours included at least three (3) semester hours in accounting or auditing courses, up to a maximum of two (2) years of Specialized Experience.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
