Job summary

Cowlitz County, WA is seeking a Payroll Specialist to perform auditing and reporting on all county department payrolls, ensuring accuracy, authorization and timeliness. The role also involves advising the Auditor and other departments on payroll and deductions, and handling monthly, quarterly and annual reporting of deductions and employer contributions.

The position includes cross-training in Licensing Specialist duties, with authority of a Deputy Auditor, and requires passing the ACT/Work Keys

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Pass Level 4 (Silver Level) of each ACT/Work Keys-National Career Readiness Tests.
  • Ten accounting credits and two years of accounting experience including payroll processing and related duties.
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and Internet applications.
  • Current DOL Vehicle Licensing Representative certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process semi-monthly payrolls for all County departments and audit payroll data.
  • Adjust employee pay, deductions, and/or taxes as needed.
  • Process, edit and post payroll to the general ledger and report to the Treasurer’s Office.
  • Troubleshoot issues with time, labor and payroll processes.
  • Audit vacation, sick leave and compensatory time balances.
  • Process and track donated leave and supplemental earnings.
  • Audit and prepare monthly, quarterly and annual payroll reporting and deductions.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and supporting information.
