Job summary

GovWell is hiring a Payments Engineer to own the local government payments space and build it into the financial backbone of the platform. This domain is still being defined, so you will shape core architecture, not just extend someone else’s design.

We value real auditability, precise fee calculations, and a system finance teams can trust. You’ll have autonomy and ownership far beyond typical roles at GovWell, with a hybrid NYC-based office and remote flexibility.

Qualifications

• Experience designing financial or transactional systems where correctness is critical.
• Strong opinions on how a payments system should be architected and ability to shape it.
• Comfort with domain design and ambiguity at the system level.
• Experience with payment processors integrations (Stripe, Finix or similar) is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

• Design the financial architecture GovWell runs on—the system of record for every dollar.
• Build a real ledger that is auditable, consistent, and trusted by finance teams.
• Turn fee calculation into a precise, auditable computation.
• Make partial payments, deposits, and refunds first-class citizens of the platform.
• Own the migration from current payments to the new system with real customers and money.
• Partner with finance teams, municipal staff, and engineers to support the ledger.
• Set the technical standard for the domain once it exists.
