Overview

The Paving Laborer at Martin Marietta is a vital member of the production and field operations team. This role involves manual labor and equipment‑assisted tasks to support the installation, repair, and maintenance of asphalt surfaces—including highways, parking lots, and industrial sites. The company requires individuals who are hardworking, observant, and dedicated to maintaining a clean, hazard‑free work environment while assisting skilled Operators and Foreman.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with the manual distribution, raking, and luting of hot‑mix asphalt to ensure a smooth, even grade prior to compaction.
• Shovel excess asphalt, gravel, or stone; fill trenches and ditches; and clear debris from the paving path to ensure a seamless finish.
• Support the crew in patching asphalt surfaces with hot or cold mix, ensuring joints are matched and finished to specifications.
• Set up and move traffic control devices (cones, barricades, signs) and act as a flagger/spotter to ensure safety for the crew and the public.
• Assist in backing trucks and dumping materials into the paver, using hand signals to communicate with drivers and operators.
• Maintain a clean and organized work site, yard, or plant; sweep roadways, curbs, and gutters; and clean hand tools and power equipment.
• Proactively identify and remove potential hazards such as spilled material or debris from work areas and beneath plant machinery.
• Use a variety of hand and power tools, including shovels, rakes, hand tamps, pneumatic drills, and saws, ensuring all tools are cleaned and stored properly after use.
• Assist Plant and Equipment Operators with daily tasks, including greasing and lubrication of machinery and performing pre‑shift safety inspections.
• Show willingness to learn the operation of heavy equipment, such as skid steers, backhoes, and rollers, to provide backup support for the crew.
• Perform basic maintenance on company structures, including painting, repairing fences/guardrails, and mowing grass in service yards.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience.
• License: Class C driver’s license.
• Experience: 1+ year in asphalt, paving, or construction.
• Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting, OSHA compliance and regulation, time management.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.
• Bending, stooping, climbing, and reaching; maintaining three points of contact when on/off machinery or ladders.
• Strong hand‑eye‑foot coordination and good depth perception for distances up to 150 feet.

Working Conditions

All duties require outside assignments with work in all weather conditions—cold, wet, dry and dusty. Noise levels can reach up to 85 dbs.

Compensation

The hiring range for this position is $24–$29 per hour exclusive of benefits or bonuses. Base compensation will be determined based on geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiency, skills, education and experience.
