HELP LEAD SANSOM PARK’S NEXT CHAPTER
Sansom Park is moving forward under new leadership at both the City and Police Department levels. The department is building on meaningful progress in addressing longstanding crime concerns while strengthening professional standards, employee development, accountability, and community trust. SPPD recently earned accredited status through the Texas Police Chiefs Association Law Enforcement Best Practices Accreditation Program. The department operates an active Drone as First Responder program and a dual-purpose K9 program, giving officers access to modern tools and specialized resources. We are looking for an experienced officer who is ready to take the next step and help lead a motivated patrol team with several developing officers. POSITION AT A GLANCE
Starting Annual Salary: $82,183.92, with overtime eligibility. The position tops out at $87,185.28 in Year 5.
Additional Pay:
Monthly TCOLE certification pay is available at $50 for Intermediate, $100 for Advanced, and $150 for Master certification.
Monthly education pay is available at $50 for an associate degree, $100 for a bachelor’s degree, and $150 for a master’s degree.
Schedule: The Patrol Sergeant will work a flexible 12-hour Panama schedule designed to support and provide leadership across one day shift and one night shift.
Role
The Patrol Sergeant reports to the Patrol Lieutenant and supervises a patrol rotation consisting of one day shift and one night shift with a total of four officers.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Patrol Lieutenant, the Patrol Sergeant supervises Police Officers assigned to a patrol rotation. The Sergeant provides leadership across both day and night patrol operations and ensures that officers are prepared for duty, properly trained and equipped, and consistently applying Police Department policies and procedures. The Sergeant participates in patrol operations, supports officers in the field, and promotes the effective enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides safety and security to the community by supervising and participating in law enforcement,
- patrol, investigations, administrative support, community engagement, and other assigned
- activities.
- Supervises assigned personnel, deploys officers, monitors work, evaluates performance, communicates
- departmental directives, and ensures effective communication of law enforcement issues, priorities,
- and expectations.
- Develops assigned officers through coaching, mentoring, training, constructive feedback, and
- consistent supervision.
- Maintains discipline and ensures compliance with Police Department policies, procedures, and
- general orders. Ensures that officers are prepared for duty, adequately trained and equipped, and
- held accountable for assigned responsibilities.
- Promotes a professional work environment where employees are treated with dignity and respect while
- performance and conduct standards are consistently maintained.
- Monitors Patrol Division activities to ensure the consistent application of department regulations
- and procedures and the effective enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.
- Conducts shift briefings, inspects personnel and equipment, communicates special enforcement
- priorities and departmental goals, and monitors assigned cases for progress and disposition.
- Reviews reports for accuracy, completeness, legal sufficiency, and timely submission. Provides
- direction and corrective instruction when reports or investigations require additional work.
- Prepares and maintains administrative records, statistical reports, event logs, activity records,
- and other required documentation. Advises the Patrol Lieutenant and command staff regarding significant incidents, investigations,
- employee conduct, performance concerns, citizen complaints, staffing issues, and other matters
- requiring command attention.
- Supervises and participates in critical incidents and tactical situations. Responds to major crime
- scenes, serious accidents, emergencies, and other significant events and assumes command when
- appropriate.
- Performs the duties of a Police Officer and assists officers in the performance of their duties.
- Responds to emergency and nonemergency calls for service, investigates criminal activity and
- traffic incidents, makes arrests, prepares reports, and performs other law enforcement functions.
- Provides active field supervision, backup, guidance, and decision making support to officers during
- calls for service and proactive enforcement activities.
- Encourages lawful, professional, and proactive police work that addresses community concerns while
- protecting individual rights and maintaining public trust.
- Builds and maintains productive relationships with residents, businesses, community organizations,
- schools, other City departments, and partner agencies.
- Performs specialized functions as assigned, including patrol management, training, investigations,
- special enforcement activities, intervention efforts, and participation in departmental programs.
- Manages special assignments and projects and assists with the development of operational plans and
- budgets.
- Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the Police Department by ensuring
- compliance with applicable laws, policies, procedures, and professional standards.
- Maintains regular and timely attendance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED.
- Four years of full-time law enforcement experience. Current Texas Peace Officer license in good
- standing.
- TCOLE Intermediate Peace Officer Certificate, or the ability to obtain the certificate within six
- months of appointment.
- Valid driver license. A Texas Class C driver license must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
- Ability to work a flexible Panama schedule supporting both day and night patrol operations. Ability to perform the essential functions of a licensed peace officer and Patrol Sergeant, with or
- without reasonable accommodation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience as a Patrol Sergeant or Corporal TCOLE Advanced or Master Peace Officer Certificate.
- Associate degree or higher in criminal justice, public administration, leadership, or a related
- field.
- Field Training Officer, instructor, mentoring, or employee development experience. Completion of
- recognized law enforcement leadership or supervisory training.
- Experience with proactive patrol, critical incident management, report review, officer
- accountability, and community engagement. Experience working in a small or midsized department where leaders balance administrative
- responsibilities with active street involvement.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of City and Police Department policies, procedures, rules, and general orders. Knowledge
- of local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and ordinances.
- Knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices, and procedures, including laws governing arrest,
- probable cause, search and seizure, use of force, rules of evidence, and the care and custody of
- evidence and property.
- Knowledge of strategies and tactics for supervising and deploying law enforcement personnel
- and equipment. Knowledge of patrol operations, criminal investigations, critical incident response, officer
- safety,report review, and community engagement.
- Ability to lead, coach, mentor, and evaluate employees while maintaining accountability and
- professional working relationships.
- Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, emotional control, and sound decision making
- within established legal and procedural guidelines.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees, command staff, City officials, partner agencies,
- residents, and members of the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with City employees, criminal
- justice agencies, community partners, and the public.
- Ability to operate effectively in a small department where supervisors must balance administrative
- responsibilities, employee development, community engagement, and active field involvement.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
- The selected candidate must successfully complete a comprehensive personal history and background
- investigation conducted in compliance with TCOLE requirements, including a fingerprint based
- criminal history check.
- The selected candidate must also successfully complete all required pre-employment screening, which
- may include a psychological examination, polygraph examination, physical examination, and drug
- screening.
- Appointment is contingent upon the applicant meeting all City of Sansom Park and TCOLE requirements
- for employment and appointment as a Texas peace officer.
