Job summary

The City of Richmond Police Department is seeking a Police Officer - Lateral to perform general duty police work, patrol the city, enforce laws, and maintain records. Responsibilities include responding to citizen calls, conducting investigations, and supporting prosecution preparations.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, plus one year of sworn LE experience. Virginia certification is preferred; background checks and polygraph are part of the process.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; equivalent training may be approved.
• One year of experience as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer is required.
• Virginia CJDS certification as Law Enforcement Officer preferred.

Responsibilities

• Patrol City jurisdiction to enforce traffic laws and other offenses using multiple transport modes.
• Make traffic stops and intervene in criminal activity as needed.
• Conduct field services, monitor police radio, and respond to calls and complaints.
• Obtain and issue warrants; process crime scenes; fingerprint and photograph suspects.
• Investigate potential arson; provide surveillance; interview suspects and witnesses.
• Prepare for prosecutions; interact with city agencies and community groups; maintain reports.
