Join us as a Patient Services Representative, Neurosurgery at UPMC

University of Pittsburgh Physicians Department of Neurological Surgery is hiring a full-time Patient Services Representative to join their team in Oakland, PA. This role involves working Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm, supporting scheduling for multiple physicians at the UPMC Presbyterian Neurological Surgery clinic. Responsibilities include scheduling follow-up and imaging appointments, and providing after-visit summaries and instructions to patients at checkout.

We seek candidates with strong customer service skills, previous experience in clinical scheduling, and a preference for those who enjoy a busy workday. Our department is the largest academic neurological surgery department in the country and is actively growing. We prioritize excellent patient experience and internal promotion opportunities. The clinic hours are Monday to Friday, with no evening, weekend, or holiday work.

Responsibilities:
  1. Assist patients in navigating the healthcare system by providing clear instructions and follow-up on unresolved questions to ensure continuity of care.
  2. Handle administrative duties such as scanning medical records and faxing.
  3. Guide patients through self-arrival technology or check-in at the desk based on their preference.
  4. Schedule or connect patients to resources for ancillary services during checkout.
  5. Understand service recovery principles and take appropriate actions to meet patient expectations.
  6. Educate patients about financial responsibilities and connect them to advocacy resources as needed.
  7. Obtain signatures for consent to treatment and financial responsibility in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  8. Verify insurance benefits via online systems or phone inquiries.
  9. Promote and assist with MyUPMC patient portal registration.
  10. Collect copayments and other payments at the point of service.
  11. Provide a warm greeting to all patients.
  12. Register patients in the Biometrics program and explain its benefits.
  13. Update patient registration information at checkout.
  14. Manage phone calls by triaging or directing them to appropriate areas or providers.
  15. Schedule follow-up appointments during checkout.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent. Preferred qualifications include experience with computer applications, office equipment, and typing skills, along with two years of experience in medical billing, customer service, or related fields. Knowledge of medical terminology and experience with health record systems like Medipac or Epic are also preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 clearance
