Job summary

UAB Medicine is seeking a detail-oriented clerical professional to support physicians and providers in a busy clinical setting. The role includes scheduling, data entry in IDX, and obtaining necessary authorizations to ensure smooth patient care.

The successful candidate will manage patient flow, verify demographics, assist with billing tasks, and coordinate care across satellite clinics, enabling high-quality service and efficient operations.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years office/clerical experience.
• Strong organizational, leadership and customer service skills.
• Basic medical terminology and PC/databases knowledge; math/bookkeeping skills.
• Preference for CPC certification; CPR required within 30 days.

Responsibilities

• Schedule and add-on patients to clinic; answer phones and route calls.
• Enter demographic and insurance data into IDX system; obtain authorizations.
• Schedule surgical cases and assist with patient flow in clinic.
• Check in/out patients and collect copays; perform follow-up communications.
• Coordinate patient care with satellite clinics and assist with related forms.

Position Overview

Pay range: $16.00 - $26.00 / hour

Shifts: full-time AM

Job Description

Under general supervision and according to UAB Medicine established policies and procedures, provides a variety of specialized services in support of the operations of their assigned physician and advanced practice providers. May schedule and add-on patients to clinic, answer telephones and route calls, enter demographic and insurance data into IDX system, obtain insurance authorizations and referrals, and schedule surgical cases. May arrive and check out patients in clinic, as well as collect copays. Communicate and perform patient follow-up as necessary. Work with outside staff to schedule and coordinate patient care at satellite clinics. May perform other clerical duties related to patient care such as home health forms and patient and family leave forms.

Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years office/clerical experience in customer service, call center, physician office or other clinical environment required.
2. Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills; excellent customer service and communication skills required.
3. Must: (1) Attend all required course work assigned by management; (2) possess basic knowledge of medical terminology and advanced knowledge of PC applications, software, and database management; (3) be able to perform math & bookkeeping skills; (5) possess exceptional telephone & customer service skills; and (5) be knowledgeable of English grammar & punctuation Business Office Education or similar coursework preferred.
4. Currently certified as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) preferred.
5. Currently certified with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
