Job summary

UAB Medicine is seeking a detail-oriented clinic support specialist in Birmingham to assist physicians and providers. You will schedule patients, enter demographic and insurance data, obtain referrals, and help coordinate care across satellite clinics.

The role requires a high school diploma and 2 years of clerical or customer service experience, with strong medical terminology knowledge and proficient PC skills. CPR due within 30 days and CPC certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of office/clerical experience in a medical setting or customer service role.
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge; strong PC skills; ability to perform math and bookkeeping tasks.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by AAPC preferred; CPR certification required within 30 days.

Responsibilities

  • Answer calls, schedule patients, and enter demographics and insurance data into the IDX system.
  • Obtain insurance authorizations and referrals and schedule surgical cases.
  • Check in/out patients, collect copays, and follow up with patients as needed.
  • Coordinate patient care with satellite clinics and perform other clerical duties as required.

Pay range: $16.00 - $26.00 / hour

Shifts: full-time am

Job Description

Under general supervision and according to UAB Medicine established policies and procedures, provides a variety of specialized services in support of the operations of their assigned physician and advanced practice providers. May schedule and add-on patients to clinic, answer telephones and route calls, enter demographic and insurance data into IDX system, obtain insurance authorizations and referrals, and schedule surgical cases. May arrive and check out patients in clinic, as well as collect copays. Communicate and perform patient follow-up as necessary. Work with outside staff to schedule and coordinate patient care at satellite clinics. May perform other clerical duties related to patient care such as home health forms and patient and family leave forms.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years office/clerical experience in customer service, call center, physician office or other clinical environment required. Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills; excellent customer service and communication skills required. Must: (1) Attend all required course work assigned by management; (2) possess basic knowledge of medical terminology and advanced knowledge of PC applications, software, and database management; (3) be able to perform math & bookkeeping skills; (5) possess exceptional telephone & customer service skills; and (5) be knowledgeable of English grammar & punctuation Business Office Education or similar coursework preferred. Currently certified as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) preferred. Currently certified with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
