Job summary

Henry Ford Health in Detroit is seeking a Patient Safety Assistant to maintain a safe environment for patients under the direction of a registered nurse. The PSA will assist with feeding, bathing, toileting, ambulation, and activities, while providing companionship.

This contingent midnight role requires strong communication, basic computer skills, and the ability to multitask calmly in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Effective communication with patients and staff.
• Ability to use a microphone and headset for Tele-Sitting.
• Basic computer operation and multitasking.
• Ability to prioritize simultaneous situations.
• Successful completion of BLS Heartsaver during orientation.

Responsibilities

• Provide a safe environment for the patient under the direction of the RN.
• Observe the patient and report changes per protocol.
• Assist with feeding, bathing, toileting, and ambulating.
• Engage in activities the patient enjoys (reading, cards, etc.).
• Provide companionship and monitor patient comfort.

Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Patient Safety Assistant (PSA) will provide a safe environment for the patient under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Tasks include patient observation, assisting with feeding, bathing, toileting, ambulating, engaging in activities that the patient enjoys i.e. reading, playing cards, etc., and companionship. The PSA will maintain a commitment to the philosophy, mission, and values of the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS). The PSA working the monitor will recognize and report any changes observed to the RN per protocol.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS REQUIRED (for Tele-Sitting only):

• Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset.
• Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient changes.
• Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff.
• Basic computer operation skills.
• Efficiency in multitasking.
• Ability to prioritize simultaneous situations.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

• Successful completion of BLS Heartsaver during orientation.
