Job summary

AdventHealth Lenexa City Center in Kansas is seeking a Patient Food Service Host – PRN to support the Food and Nutrition Services team. You will assist patients with meal ordering, deliver trays, and ensure dietary compliance while delivering compassionate, patient-centered service.

This role requires excellent communication, strong customer service, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced healthcare environment. PRN schedule may include weekends and 12-hour shifts.

Job Summary

The Food and Nutrition Services (FANS) Attendant enhances the patient experience by providing exceptional meal service, assisting patients with meal selection, assembling and delivering trays, and ensuring adherence to prescribed dietary requirements. This position serves as a key point of contact between patients and Food and Nutrition Services, utilizing a computerized diet office system and knowledge of therapeutic diets to support patient satisfaction and nutritional care. This position is responsible for meal service accuracy, service recovery, patient rounding, and maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant environment while promoting excellence in customer service and patient-centered care.

Essential Functions
  • Assists patients with meal ordering utilizing computerized diet office systems and approved meal ordering technology.
  • Guides patients through menu selections while ensuring choices comply with prescribed diets and nutritional guidelines.
  • Provides personalized meal recommendations to enhance patient satisfaction and dining experience.
  • Reviews and verifies patient dietary requirements to ensure meal accuracy and compliance with physician orders.
  • Assembles patient meal trays according to therapeutic diet standards, presentation guidelines, and department procedures.
  • Delivers patient meals accurately and timely while verifying patient identification and meal assignments.
  • Ensures patients receive correct meal trays and confirms all dining needs are met before leaving the patient room.
  • Rounds on patients and nursing units to evaluate meal satisfaction, identify service concerns, and provide service recovery when needed.
  • Investigates and resolves patient and customer concerns promptly, professionally, and effectively.
  • Maintains accurate patient meal records and updates dietary information as required.
  • Communicates effectively with nursing staff, dietitians, and other healthcare team members regarding patient meal needs and dietary concerns.
  • Supports departmental quality improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of workspaces, equipment, tray line areas, and service equipment.
  • Stocks food service supplies and maintains inventory levels within assigned areas.
  • Follows food safety, infection prevention, sanitation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and patient confidentiality standards.
  • Performs physically active duties, including extensive walking, standing, lifting, pushing meal carts, and working extended shifts as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with patients, visitors, nursing staff, and team members both in person and by telephone.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to handle concerns promptly, courteously, and effectively.
  • Ability to utilize common software applications, computerized diet office systems, iPads, ToughBooks, and other departmental technology.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition services practices preferred.
  • Ability to effectively multitask and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of nutrition services software systems preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and compassion when interacting with patients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail while processing meal orders and delivering trays.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a healthcare team.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with food safety, sanitation, and infection prevention standards.
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Work Experience
  • Previous customer service, food service, hospitality, healthcare, patient services, or nutrition services experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • ServSafe Certification preferred.
Additional Information
  • This position requires extensive walking, standing for extended periods, pushing meal carts, and performing repetitive physical activities throughout the shift. Work schedules may include weekends, holidays, and shifts up to 12 hours in length based on departmental needs. The FANS Attendant plays a vital role in patient satisfaction by providing outstanding service and ensuring an exceptional dining experience.
