Job summary

Qualifications

• Completion of a formal phlebotomy program with classroom and on-the-job training.
• Ability to practice universal precautions during daily duties.
• Experience handling blood specimens across neonate to geriatric populations.
• Must use electronic data processing equipment for daily tasks.
• Nursing student with at least 1 completed semester may pursue phlebotomy certification within 12 months of hire or transfer.

Responsibilities

• Greets the public in a professional, cheerful manner.
• Answers telephone and directs inquiries to appropriate persons.
• Draws blood properly with minimal discomfort and rarely misses a vein.
• Identifies and labels specimens and uses the computer to register and accession specimens.
• Knows needles, anticoagulants, handling, and preparation of tests.
• Assists with inventory and putting away supplies.
• Assists with specimen processing.
• Performs other related miscellaneous duties.
