Job summary

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Patient Care Technician to support the Nursing team under RN supervision. The role includes vital sign monitoring, phlebotomy or related asepsis tasks, preoperative skin prep and specimen collection, and assisting with admissions, transfers, and discharges.

Responsibilities also cover patient hygiene, positioning, transport, feeding, and documentation of intake and output.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

• Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
• Carries out medical asepsis when performing skills including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
• Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin prep, dressing changes, collecting specimens, and applying binders or braces.
• Assists with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
• Directly provides for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
• Turns, positions and ambulates patients; transports patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
• Feeds patients, serves water and nourishments, and records intake.
• Assists patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
• Participates in nursing care conferences and reports pertinent patient information to the nurse in charge.
• Maintains equipment and supplies and ensures neatness and cleanliness of the unit.
• Cleans areas per guidelines using approved disinfectants and care of housekeeping equipment.
• Stocks and outfits patient rooms and nursing units.
