Job summary

UPMC in Pittsburgh seeks a Patient Care Technician to support nursing staff with patient procedures and activities of daily living. You will assist with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies and provide feedback to the RN on patient status.

Core duties include phlebotomy, vital signs, I&O, blood glucose testing, specimen collections, Foley care, and routine documentation. Strong teamwork and adherence to safety policies are essential.

Responsibilities

• Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.
• Assists with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies.
• Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
• Performs core nursing assistant tasks (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) and at least four of phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
• Ensures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department and communicates with other departments.
• Participates in universal unit activities and responds to call lights and transports patients.
• Receives feedback, identifies learning needs, and seeks assistance to plan and prioritize activities.
• Provides instruction to patients and families under RN direction; may apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per protocol.
• Maintains clear, respectful communication with health care team and supports safety in the workplace.
• Documents in the medical record according to established procedures and performs department clerical functions as needed.
• Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse; may perform advanced skills as needed (phlebotomy, IV removal, 12-lead EKG, etc.).
• Achieves and maintains competency in advanced skills based on departmental needs.
