Job summary

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for Medicine Unit 4 - Progressive Ventilator Support Unit (PVSU). This full-time night-shift role runs three 12-hour shifts, 7:00pm to 7:00am, with rotating weekends and a 36-hour workweek.

The candidate will support daily living activities, monitor vital signs, assist with mobility, phlebotomy, EKGs, and specimen collection under RN supervision. AHA BLS within 90 days is required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required with certification program options listed.
• CNAs, NCMA, NCPCT or Navy Hospital Corps School certificates accepted.
• EMR/EMS/EMT/AEMT or RN/LPN/RT/PT clinical program involvement considered.
• PCT or Nursing Assistant experience within last three years may apply.
• AHA BLS certification required within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care and assist with activities of daily living.
• Monitor vital signs, mobility, ambulation, and phlebotomy procedures.
• Perform EKG testing, IV care, and specimen collection as directed.
• Assist with Foley catheter insertion/removal and safety documentation.
• Report changes in patient condition to the RN and medical staff.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for Medicine Unit 4 - Progressive Ventilator Support Unit (PVSU). This is a Full Time, Night Shift (12-hour shift) position.

Hours: 7:00pm to 7:00am - Three 12-hour shifts (36 hours per week), with rotating weekends.

Department Overview

Medicine Unit 4 - Progressive Ventilator Support Unit (PVSU) is an eight-bed step‑down unit, specializing in treatment of patients on mechanical ventilators. Most patients admitted to PVSU come from an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). PVSU focuses on maximizing rehabilitation while continuing to treat the cause of the illness. This goal is accomplished through intensive physical therapy, respiratory care and mental stimulation.

Responsibilities

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and documents in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) AND one of the following is required: Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT) or Physical Therapist (PT) program, or Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant.

Certifications/Licensure

• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience

• One year of health care experience (Preferred).
