Job summary

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Medicine Unit. This full-time night shift runs 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM with rotating weekends, in a 24-bed Medicine Unit caring for CHF, COPD, sepsis, renal, and other conditions.

The PCT will provide patient care, assist with activities of daily living, take vital signs, draw blood, perform phlebotomy, EKG testing, and specimen collection under RN direction, ensuring patient safety and accurate documentation.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) and one of the following is required.
• Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
• National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
• US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
• EMR/EMS/EMT/AEMT/Paramedic, or
• Clinical program enrollment with RN/LPN/RT/PT exposure, or
• Recent PCT/Nursing Assistant experience (within 3 years).

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care and assist with daily activities of living.
• Monitor vital signs, mobility, and ambulation; assist with phlebotomy and specimen collection.
• Perform EKG testing and peripheral IV removal as directed.
• Compliance with patient safety practices and timely documentation.
• Assist with Foley catheter insertion and removal under RN supervision.

Job description

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Medicine Unit. This is a Full Time, Night Shift (12-hour shift) position.

Hours: 7:00PM to 7:00AM - Three 12-hour shifts (36 hours per week), with rotating weekends.

Department Overview:This 24-bed Medicine Unit is seeking a compassionatePatient Care Technician to support our nursing team! Our diverse patient population includes but is not limited to CHF, sickle cell, renal failure, vascular, sepsis, COPD, pneumonia, wound care, and an assortment of varying disease processes. The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and documents in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Qualifications

Education:

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) and one of the following is required:

• Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or

• Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or

• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or

• National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or

• Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or

• Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or

• Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT) or Physical Therapist (PT) program, or

• Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant.

Certifications/Licensure:

• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience:

• One year of health care experience (Preferred).
