Purpose and Scope:
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including those related to patient satisfaction, and actively participates in process improvement activities that help achieve the organization’s Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Related
Education:
- Assist healthcare team members in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures such as Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access.
Treatment:
- Welcome assigned patients, inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
- Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by law.
- Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight; evaluate vascular access before treatment.
- Initiate dialysis treatment as prescribed, including setting blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
- Monitor for intradialytic problems and provide interventions as directed.
- Respond to patient reactions to therapy, document all relevant data, and ensure safety alarms are active.
- Discontinue treatment following procedures, evaluate patient condition, and document.
- Prepare and apply dressings, evaluate access during treatment, and report abnormalities.
- Collect laboratory specimens and ensure proper handling and documentation.
Staff Related
- Assist in training direct care staff under supervision of a nurse.
Record Keeping
- Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data accurately and timely, review treatment sheets, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.
Infection Control
- Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families on infection prevention.
Transitional Care Unit
- Follow new patients through initial weeks of dialysis, provide education, coordinate care, and assist with transition to home dialysis options.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Perform tasks involving heavy lifting, prolonged standing, and patient mobility assistance. Must pass color blindness test; work environment includes healthcare setting with exposure to infectious materials.
Education and Licenses:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Must meet CMS-approved certification requirements and hold necessary state licensure and training.
Experience and Skills:
- Preferred previous patient care experience; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
