PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement initiatives to meet organizational goals.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Related
Education:
  • Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures such as OLC, AMP, UKM, and disease process/access.
Treatment:
  • Welcome patients, assess wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, and perform cannulation and heparin administration as delegated.
  • Obtain vital signs, weight, and perform pre-treatment vascular access evaluation.
  • Initiate dialysis per prescribed orders, monitor response, and manage intradialytic issues.
  • Record treatment data accurately, including vital signs, treatment parameters, and progress notes.
  • Discontinue treatment, evaluate patient, and ensure proper hemostasis and dressings.
  • Document all procedures and patient responses, report significant changes to RN or supervisor.
  • Maintain safety alarms, perform safety checks, and ensure infection control protocols are followed.
Staff Related
  • Assist in training direct care staff under RN supervision.
Record Keeping
  • Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data accurately, and prepare patient charts and lab specimens.
Infection Control
  • Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families.
Transitional Care Unit
  • Follow new patients through their first 4 weeks, reinforce education, coordinate care, and assist with home dialysis transition and supply management.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Requires physical ability to perform heavy lifting, prolonged standing, and bending. May involve exposure to infectious materials and environmental hazards. Travel between facilities may be required. Employees must pass Ishihara Color Blindness test; accommodations can be made if needed.

Education and Licenses
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet CMS-approved certification requirements and hold relevant licensure.
Experience and Skills
  • Preferred prior patient care experience; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required for continued employment.
