Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the hemodialysis healthcare team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients. Works under the supervision of a licensed nurse, following FMCNA policies, procedures, and training, and complies with all relevant regulations. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to meet FMCNA's goals.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Education:

  • Assist healthcare team members in providing detailed patient education regarding adequacy measures, disease process, and access, including programs like OLC, AMP, and UKM.

Patient Treatment:

  • Welcome patients, inquire about their well-being, evaluate vascular access, and obtain vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment.
  • Perform vascular access evaluation and cannulation, administer Heparin as delegated, and initiate dialysis per prescribed orders.
  • Monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, and provide interventions as needed.
  • Discontinue treatment following protocols, evaluate patient before and after, and document all relevant information accurately.
  • Ensure safety alarms are active, monitor vascular access pressures, and record all treatment data precisely.
  • Report significant changes or concerns to the supervising nurse or PCT III, and document interventions and patient responses.
  • Obtain laboratory specimens as prescribed and ensure proper documentation and handling.

Maintenance/Technical:

  • Maintain a clean, safe environment; disinfect equipment and surfaces between treatments.
  • Prepare dialysis machines, conduct alarm tests, and ensure all safety protocols are followed.
  • Handle spills appropriately and organize supplies efficiently.

Record Keeping:

  • Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data accurately, review treatment sheets, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work involves desk and computer tasks, patient interaction, and travel between facilities.
  • Work environment is a healthcare setting with potential exposure to infectious materials. Heavy lifting, prolonged standing, and bending are required, with assistance available for heavy items.

EDUCATION AND LICENSES:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet CMS-approved certification and licensure requirements.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Preferably two years of patient care experience; dialysis training and CPR certification are mandatory for continued employment.
