Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Related Education:

• Assist in patient education regarding adequacy measures and disease process/access.

Treatment:

• Welcome and assess patient wellbeing.
• Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated.
• Obtain vital signs, weight, and perform access evaluation pre-treatment.
• Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis treatment, documenting all relevant information.
• Respond to intradialytic issues and evaluate patient response.
• Ensure safety alarms are enabled and document treatment parameters accurately.
• Perform lab specimen collection and prepare for testing.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of treatment area and equipment.

Staff and Education:

• Assist in training staff and reinforce infection control practices.

Record Keeping and Infection Control:

• Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data, and ensure proper record maintenance.
• Support infection control policies and participate in audits.

Transitional Care Unit:

• Follow new patients through initial dialysis period, reinforce education, and coordinate care.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Requires physical ability to lift weights up to 40 lbs, stand for prolonged periods, and perform patient handling tasks. Work environment is typical of healthcare settings, with exposure to infectious materials. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for disabilities.

Education and Licenses:

• High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
