Job description

Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and regulations set by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Related
  • Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access, including programs like OLC, AMP, UKM.
  • Welcome patients, assess wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or legally permitted.
  • Record vital signs, weight, and treatment parameters pre, during, and post-treatment, and document all relevant data accurately.
  • Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders, ensuring safety alarms are active and patient response is monitored.
  • Perform interventions for intradialytic issues, monitor vascular access, and manage laboratory specimen collection and blood spill cleanup.
Staff Related
  • Assist in training direct care staff under supervision of a nurse.
Education/Communication
  • Follow organizational policies, maintain a safe and clean environment, and ensure all equipment and surfaces are disinfected between treatments.
  • Prepare treatment setups, perform alarm tests, and initiate delivery systems as required.
Record Keeping
  • Participate in CQI activities, enter data accurately and timely, review treatment sheets, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.
Infection Control
  • Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and reinforce patient and staff adherence to policies.
Transitional Care Unit
  • Manage care for new patients during their first 4 weeks, reinforce education, coordinate multidisciplinary scheduling, and support transition to home therapies.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
  • Perform tasks requiring standing, bending, lifting up to 40 lbs, and assisting with patient mobility, in a healthcare environment with exposure to infectious materials.
Education and Licenses:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet CMS-approved certification and licensing requirements.
Experience and Skills:
  • Preferred prior patient care experience; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required for continued employment.
