Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to achieve organizational goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Related Education:

• Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures and disease process.

Treatment:

• Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, monitor vital signs, and manage dialysis treatment as prescribed.
• Document treatment details, evaluate patient response, and report significant changes to nursing staff.
• Ensure safety alarms are enabled, perform safety checks, and maintain infection control standards.

Staff Related:

• Assist in training direct care staff under supervision.

Education/Communication:

• Follow organizational policies, ensure a clean environment, and prepare equipment for treatment.

Record Keeping:

• Participate in CQI activities, record data accurately, and prepare patient documentation.

Infection Control:

• Support infection control practices and participate in audits and education.

Transitional Care Unit:

• Manage care for new patients, coordinate education, and assist with modality transitions.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Includes lifting, standing, and working in a healthcare environment with exposure to infectious materials. Accommodations available as needed.

Education and Licenses:

• High school diploma or G.E.D., with required certifications and licensure.

Experience and Skills:

• Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR required.
