Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Supports FMCNA's mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy. Adheres to the FMCNA Compliance Program, following all regulatory and FMS policy requirements.

Functions as part of the hemodialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, training, and regulations set by relevant authorities. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities to improve patient outcomes.

DUTIES / ACTIVITIES:

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

  • Drive FMS culture through values and customer service standards.
  • Provide outstanding service to all customers.
  • Develop effective relationships through communication.
  • Respond promptly to customer issues and follow up appropriately.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

PATIENT CARE:

  • Assist healthcare team with patient education on adequacy measures and disease process.
  • Welcome patients, inquire about their well-being, and report concerns.
  • Evaluate vascular access and report findings.
  • Obtain vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation pre-treatment.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation, report difficulties.
  • Administer Heparin as delegated.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per orders, monitor response, and report issues.
  • Discontinue treatment following procedures, evaluate patient status, and document.
  • Calculate and program dialysis machine parameters as prescribed.
  • Ensure safety alarms are active, record treatment data, and document treatment details accurately.
  • Report significant changes to the nurse supervisor and observe patient and machine safety.
  • Perform interventions for unusual patient status and monitor vascular access during treatment.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens as prescribed.

MAINTENANCE/TECHNICAL:

  • Maintain a safe, clean environment, disinfect equipment, and prepare for treatments.
  • Perform alarm testing and ensure proper system setup.
  • Clean spills promptly and organize supplies efficiently.

CLERICAL & ADMINISTRATIVE:

  • Participate in CQI activities and document treatment data accurately.
  • Review treatment sheets, prepare admission paperwork, and handle lab requisitions.

OTHER:

Perform additional duties as assigned.

ADDENDUM FOR PATIENT CARE TECHNICIANS IN HOME PROGRAMS:

  • Assist with home visits, reinforce education, schedule appointments, and handle supply management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Includes lifting, standing, bending, and travel, with exposure to infectious materials. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

EDUCATION:

  • CMS-approved certification or high school diploma/GED with certification within required timelines.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Preferred prior patient care experience; completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
