PURPOSE AND SCOPE: Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Patient Related Education: Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures and disease process/access.
2. Treatment: Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, obtain vital signs, initiate dialysis, monitor response, and document all procedures accurately.
3. Staff Related: Assist in training direct care staff under supervision of a nurse.
4. Education/Communication: Follow policies, maintain a clean environment, and prepare equipment for treatment.
5. Record Keeping: Document treatment data, participate in CQI activities, and prepare patient charts and lab specimens.
6. Infection Control: Support infection control practices and participate in audits.
7. Transitional Care Unit: Support initial patient transition, education, and coordination of care.
8. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must be able to perform physical tasks, travel between facilities, and work in a healthcare environment.
9. Education and Licenses: High School diploma or G.E.D., valid state licensure, and certification as required.
10. Experience and Skills: Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR required.
