Purpose and Scope

Functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, adhering to organizational policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Patient-Related Education

• Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures and disease process/access.

Treatment

• Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, obtain vital signs, initiate and monitor dialysis, and evaluate patient response.

Staff-Related

• Assist in training direct care staff under nurse supervision.

Education and Communication

• Follow policies, maintain a clean environment, and prepare for dialysis treatments.

Record Keeping

• Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data accurately, and prepare patient charts and lab specimens.

Infection Control

• Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families.

Transitional Care Unit

• Follow new patients through their first 4 weeks, reinforce education, coordinate care, and assist with home dialysis education and supply management.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Includes lifting, standing, bending, and working in a healthcare environment with exposure to infectious materials. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities.

Education and Licenses

• High school diploma or G.E.D., state or national certification, and appropriate licensure required.

Experience and Skills

• Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
