Purpose and Scope

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and training, and in compliance with regulations set by the organization, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement initiatives such as the QEP and CQI activities to enhance patient satisfaction and care outcomes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Related
  • Assist in patient education regarding dialysis adequacy measures, disease process, and access management.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, obtain vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment, and evaluate patient response during dialysis.
  • Monitor and document treatment parameters, ensure safety alarms are active, and report any changes or complications to the nurse or supervisor.
  • Prepare and organize supplies, maintain infection control standards, and assist with laboratory specimen collection.
Staff and Education
  • Assist in training direct care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Follow organizational policies, maintain a safe environment, and participate in infection control practices and patient education.
Record Keeping
  • Accurately document treatment data, participate in CQI activities, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.
Physical Demands and Conditions

Requires physical ability to lift weights up to 40 lbs, perform patient transfers, and stand for prolonged periods. Work environment includes healthcare facility conditions with exposure to infectious materials. Must pass color blindness test and meet other physical and licensure requirements.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D., with state or CMS certification as required.
  • Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
