Job summary

UnityPoint Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician to provide hands-on patient care under RN supervision. The role includes activities of daily living, mobility assistance, specimen collection, and respiratory support, with careful documentation of patient status.

The position requires BLS certification (or within 3 months of hire), potential CNA certification, and ability to lift or move patients as needed. Shifts include 7pm-7:30am with every 3rd weekend/holiday rotation.

Qualifications

• CNA certification preferred
• BLS certification required within three months of hire
• Must be 16 years old or older
• Must be able to perform Level 3 Medium Work (up to 50 lbs Occasionally, up to 20 lbs Frequently, up to 10 lbs Constantly)

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care and treatments under supervision of an RN, including activities of daily living, mobility, and respiratory support as directed by the RN.
• Document care provided and observations of patient status.
• Assist with clinical procedures and maintain patient safety.
• Support unit operations and ensure patient and family-centered care across diverse settings.
• Demonstrate initiative to improve quality of care and customer service.

Overview

Shift: 7pm-7:30am, every 3rd weekend and holiday rotation; 36 hours/week

Under the direction of a licensed professional, the Patient Care Technician delivers hands‑on patient care and comfort, assists with clinical procedures and technical tasks, and accurately observes, reports, and documents patient status. The role supports safe, efficient unit operations by focusing on personal care, mobility, nutrition, hydration, elimination, and prevention of complications, while preparing patients and environments for procedures. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, the PCT provides compassionate, patient- and family-centered support across diverse care settings to promote quality outcomes and a positive experience.

• PCTs will perform patient care and treatments under supervision of a RN. Provides and documents care including, but not limited to, activities of daily living, mobility, specimen collection and respiratory support activities as directed by the RN.

• Possess the ability to lift, move, position and transport patients.

• Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.

• Demonstrates initiative to improve quality of care, patient and employee safety, and customer service.

• Team members under the age of 18 may not independently operate mechanical lift equipment.

Qualifications

License(s)/Certification(s):

• CNA certification preferred

• Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.

Other:

• Must be 16 years old or older

• Level 3 Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
