Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Patient Care Technician I to support RN-led patient care in a busy hospital setting. The role emphasizes safety, effective communication, and compassionate assistance with daily living activities for patients.

The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, Basic Life Support within 30 days, English proficiency, medical terminology knowledge, and solid computer and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a high school education or GED.
• Basic Life Support certification within 30-days as a condition of employment.
• Ability to read, write and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner.
• Medical Terminology knowledge.
• Computer skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills to gather information from individuals, build relationships that support collaborative work within the department and across the organization and provide exceptional service to patients.
• Must have proven problem-solving abilities for routine situations.
• Must be able to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

• Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients.
• Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
• Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment and assists in de-escalation and restraints as directed.
• Assists patient with daily living activities such as hygiene, ambulating, meals and nourishment.
• Assists in moving, lifting, positioning and transporting patients using proper safety techniques.
• Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks and following restraint policy when applicable.
• Takes and records vital signs and measures patient height/weight.
• Performs EKGs, POC tests, bladder scanning and lab specimen transport preparation.
• Phlebotomy in certain locations.
• Assist in unit procedures and equipment checks.
• Assist RN/PI with treatments by preparing patient and equipment.
• Observes and records intake/output and tube feeding as directed.
• Demonstrates respectful, culturally appropriate communication.
• Replenishes supplies and equipment as needed.
• Requests assistance when more direction is needed.
• Keeps updated with hospital/unit changes and reads emails regularly.
• Precepting new Patient Care Technicians.
