GENERAL OVERVIEW

This job provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The incumbent is expected to perform basic nursing procedures related to patient care and comfort in stable conditions, with knowledge of patient population needs in the assigned area. Additionally, the incumbent assists the RN in caring for acutely ill patients, practicing medical asepsis, respecting patient dignity and privacy, maintaining objectivity, adhering to hospital policies, responding to emergencies, maintaining the patient/family environment, and documenting care accurately in the electronic medical record. The role works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, receiving specific work assignments from the Charge Nurse or Care Team Leader, and demonstrates efficient time management. The incumbent also performs duties related to activities on the inpatient unit, including admissions, discharges, and transfers.

Essential Responsibilities
  1. Provides, obtains, performs, and documents direct patient care activities such as activities of daily living, vital signs, ambulation, specimen collection, intake and output, meal consumption, height and weight, blood glucose testing/monitoring, point of care testing, bladder scanning, transporting patients and records, documenting oxygen use, early mobilization, assisting with exams, treatments, and procedures. (30%)
  2. Participates in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives including bedside shift reports, hourly rounding for safety, falls prevention, hand hygiene, isolation protocols, and maintaining a clean environment. (30%)
  3. Documents patient data accurately including vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection, and treatments. Reports changes in physical, mental, or emotional conditions and concerns to nursing staff. (20%)
  4. Participates in unit activities such as supply stocking and equipment cleaning. (20%)
  5. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
Minimum
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Limited or no experience; able to attend 2 weeks of training
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
  • Basic mathematics skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association)
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Clearance
Preferred
  • Recent acute care experience within the last 3 years
  • Enrollment in ASN or BSN program, with at least one clinical rotation completed (preference for those in degree programs)
