Job summary

Bayhealth Medical Center in Kent Campus Hospital is seeking a Patient Care Technician 1 (PCT 1). The role focuses on phlebotomy, ECG testing, specimen collection, and assisting with procedures under supervision, with computer-based scheduling and order entry.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent required.
  • Phlebotomy experience or certificate required.
  • Certificate in EKG, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, or Nursing Assistant preferred or 5 years phlebotomy experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy, specimen collection, and processing.
  • Assist with ECG testing and waived testing.
  • Maintain accurate data entry and lab documentation and ensure specimen integrity.
  • Rotate to inpatient and outpatient areas as needed.

General Summary:

The Patient Care Technician 1 (PCT 1) position is responsible for a wide variety of technical and clerical procedures including the collection of blood specimens. Under the direction of the lead technician or supervisor in the area assigned, the PCT I performs various patient examination and procedures including the collection of blood specimens, ICG testing and assists with procedures and escorting of patient within various areas of the services department. The employee may be assigned to complete patient scheduling and test order entry via the computer system. PCT 1 has frequent direct patient contact when performing phlebotomy, specimen collection and specimen transport. Utilizes computers for specimen/test ordering, accessioning and general data entry.

Responsibilities:
  • Technical Competence - Maintains proficiency in all areas of outpatient and inpatient services. Independently performs, with appropriate documentation, all assigned tasks including phlebotomy, specimen processing, waived testing and ECG in accordance with established policies and procedures. Consistently obtains and processes samples following established protocols. Ensures accurate patient and specimen identification as well as integrity and acceptability of specimens. Checks outpatient requisitions for accuracy. Competently explains proper instructions for obtaining specimens. Accurately enters data and completes all required documentation. Able to rotate to all inpatient and outpatient departments at the main campuses.
  • Organization and Time Management - Performs all tasks within established standards for timeliness without reminder. Adjusts to varying workloads by effectively prioritizing workload to meet the needs of the department and the care of the patients. Assists coworkers with heavy workload. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Disposes of waste, replenishes stock and alerts appropriate personnel of low inventory situations.
  • Communication – Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, nurses, physicians, and patients. Relays messages accurately, concisely and in a timely manner. Answers the telephone and conducts conversations in a professional manner, always using AIDET with patients and visitors. Demonstrates competency in appropriately completing a Safety variance report when appropriate. Consults with technical staff as necessary regarding any unusual or unexpected situations.
  • Performance Standards - Consistently uses safe work practices including appropriate use of equipment and PPE. Maintains low error rate. Shows initiative in completing mandatory requirements, training, and educational assignments on time. Consistency in accomplishing tasks in a timely manner. Recognizes factors affecting specimen/test acceptability. Maintains confidentiality of information. Displays effective problem-solving skills. Abides by all Bayhealth policies and procedures.
  • Safety/Infection Prevention - Ensures all Infection Prevention / Safety protocols are always followed. Consistently uses safe work practices including appropriate use of equipment and PPE.
  • All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
  • Education: Certificate Program High School Diploma or GED
  • Phlebotomy
  • Or Certificate Program in EKG, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, or Nursing Assistant. Or 5 years of phlebotomy experience.
  • Credential(s): Basic Life Support
  • Experience: Required: Training in Phlebotomy.
