Job summary

UPMC is seeking a Patient Care Technician to support nurses by providing direct patient care, assisting with procedures, and carrying out everyday activities of living. You will help with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies and report changes in patient status.

You will perform core nursing assistant tasks such as measuring blood glucose, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, and catheter care, and may assist with dressings, restraints, bladder scans, and IV care as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
• Performs nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND at least four of the following tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
• Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department. Establishes effective communication with other departments and maintains professional relationships; participates in universal unit activities.
• Provides instruction to patients and families under RN direction; may apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per protocol.
• Demonstrates clear communication with health care team; supports safety in the workplace; maintains productive relationships and participates in department projects and quality initiatives.
• Documents in the medical record according to established procedures; performs department clerical tasks as needed.
• An advanced skills competency may include phlebotomy, venipuncture, IV removal, arrythmia, 12-lead EKG, or NG tube clamping and removal as required by department needs.
