Position Overview: Patient Care Technician (General)

Distinguishing Features of the Class:
Under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse, a Patient Care Technician provides direct patient care, prepares patients for treatment, and assists in general patient care. This position differs from Intermediate Nursing Aide by including specialized unit competencies. Supervision is not typically required but may include providing leadership or acting as a preceptor for new staff. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Work:
  1. Provides care for assigned patients as per individualized care plans under supervision.
  2. Conducts end-of-shift hand-offs to the next Patient Care Technician.
  3. Reports to the supervising nurse regarding incomplete duties or patient changes.
  4. Observes, records, and reports patient conditions and significant changes.
  5. Performs unit-specific care competencies.
  6. Ensures patient comfort and safety, including orientation and maintaining appropriate environment.
  7. Assists with nutritional and hydration needs, including meal setup and feeding.
  8. Supports patient admission and discharge procedures.
  9. Obtains vital signs, collects specimens, and records results in EMR, notifying nurses of abnormalities.
  10. Maintains intake/output documentation and assists with activities of daily living.
  11. Responds to intercom requests and collaborates with medical staff.
  12. Implements safety interventions and protective devices for at-risk patients.
  13. Assists with patient turning, transportation, and restocking supplies.
  14. Participates in educational and departmental meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Attributes:
  • Knowledge of patient care standards and comforting techniques.
  • Customer service skills related to care delivery.
  • Ability to prioritize and efficiently use resources.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to handle critical situations.
  • Good judgment, tact, initiative, and a positive attitude.
  • Neatness and physical fitness appropriate for the role.
  • Computer literacy for documentation and communication.
Minimum Training and Experience:

Either:

  1. High school diploma and two years of patient care experience, or
  2. Completion of an approved Patient Care Technician program, or
  3. Completion of a Patient Care Technician in-service program or equivalent as approved by nursing leadership.
Substitutions:
  1. Satisfactory completion of 30 college credits in a related field may substitute for experience.
  2. Certification as Nurse Aide or Emergency Medical Technician with EKG and Phlebotomy training can substitute for one year of experience.
  3. Certification as a Patient Care Technician or Medical Assistant can substitute for one year of experience.
Special Requirements:

Current BLS or CPR certification by the American Heart Association or Red Cross must be obtained within 90 days of employment and maintained.
