Job Description

Patient Care Technician

Are you a patient care provider or healthcare student looking to advance your career within an organization that offers multiple opportunities for growth and development?

UPMC Susquehanna Valley Surgery Center is seeking a Patient Care Technician for their Perianesthesia/OR Departments.

  • This is a casual position with rotating day/evening shifts, Monday through Friday, no weekends or holidays.

Note: Title and starting pay may vary based on experience.

Role Overview: The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs various patient care duties, including assisting with procedures and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients. The PCT also completes medical record documentation, reports equipment issues, and participates in unit activities like responding to call lights and passing meal trays.

Effective communication and establishing professional relationships with patients, families, and team members are essential. The PCT reports patient status changes to the RN and provides instructions to patients and families under RN supervision.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing duties according to system-wide competencies.
  • Reporting equipment malfunctions.
  • Communicating effectively across departments.
  • Maintaining professional relationships and contributing to team activities.
  • Receiving and acting on feedback, identifying learning needs, and participating in self-review.
  • Documenting accurately in medical records and completing clerical tasks.
  • Achieving and maintaining competency in advanced skills such as IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, and NG tube management as needed.
  • Performing standard nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs, point-of-care testing, vital signs, telemetry, and specimen collection.
  • Providing patient and family instruction under RN guidance.
  • Adhering to safety policies and procedures.
  • Supporting departmental improvements and quality initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Or, enrollment in a healthcare training program with clinical rotation completion, or a bachelor's degree in health sciences.
  • Successful completion of UPMC PCT training and basic system training.
  • Preferred: Microcomputer experience, EMT or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in such programs.

Certifications and Clearances:

  • CPR certification (BLS or CPR) per AHA standards, required within 30 days of hire.
