Job summary

UPMC East is hiring a Full-Time Patient Care Technician to support the Resource Pool. The position requires working variable 12-hour shifts and delivering patient care under RN supervision.

The role covers nursing assistant duties such as vital signs, blood glucose, I&O, Foley care, and adds advanced tasks like phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, and bladder scans as per department need. Collaboration with the health care team is essential.

• Performs nursing assistant responsibilities such as vital signs, I&O, blood glucose, weights, specimen collection, Foley care.

Responsibilities

• Provides patient care including assisting with procedures and activities of daily living.
• Performs core nursing assistant tasks and at least four of the BU identified tasks (phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley removal, POC testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV removal).
• Reports equipment malfunctions and communicates with departments; participates in unit activities and call-light responsiveness.
• Communicates learning needs and seeks guidance from unit director; participates in self-review.
• Provides instruction to patients and families under RN direction; may apply, monitor and remove restraints as required.
• Communicates clearly with health care team; supports safety and diversity; participates in department projects.
• Adheres to policies; completes clerical tasks and documents in medical record.
• Maintains competency in UPMC nursing core duties including ADLs, POC testing, telemetry, specimens, and related tasks.
• Ensures equipment malfunctions are reported and supports universal unit activities.
• Identifies learning needs and requests planning assistance as needed.
• Demonstrates safety culture and professional behavior.
• Documents care and medication distribution; access to meds is restricted to distribution by nurse.
• Masters advanced skills (phlebotomy, IV removal, EKG, etc.) as needed.
