Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a Patient Care Technician in the Chicago area to support urgent care and occupational medicine settings. You will take patient histories, measure vital signs, and perform basic phlebotomy if certified, while documenting accurately in the EMR system.

The role includes assisting providers with exams, coordinating records, and maintaining HIPAA-compliant patient data. Strong communication and teamwork are essential for efficient patient flow and care quality.

Qualifications

  • 6+ months of experience as Patient Care Technician or similar role.
  • Preferred experience in Urgent Care, Occupational Medicine, and/or Phlebotomy.
  • Ability to identify equipment problems and notify team leader.
  • Computer knowledge and skills, EMR registration of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Take patient history and obtain vital signs.
  • Perform phlebotomy for lab samples if certified.
  • Complete paperwork for lab tests on blood, urine, tissue and culture samples.
  • Perform point of care testing (strep, mono, glucose, influenza, etc.).
  • Schedule and coordinate records for ancillary care.
  • Assist providers with exams and testing (pelvic exams, EKG, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA.
  • Ensure equipment is in working order.
  • Log laboratory procedures and complete related paperwork in EMR.
  • Maintain examination rooms and stock supplies.
  • Support patient flow and assist bedside providers.
  • Document patient histories and exam findings in the provider's notes.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for taking patient history and obtain vital signs
  • Perform necessary phlebotomy for collection of laboratory samples, if certified
  • Accurately complete corresponding paperwork/computer work for lab tests ordered on blood, urine, tissue and culture samples
  • Perform point of care testing such as: strep, mono, glucose, influenza, Urine pregnancy, Urinalysis, blood glucose levels
  • Schedule and coordinate necessary records for ancillary care for patients
  • Assist providers with exams and testing (pelvic exams, eye irrigations and ear irrigations, I & D’s and splinting/ ortho-glass preparation, EKG)
  • Maintain confidentiality with all patient information (HIPAA)
  • Ensures equipment is in working order
  • Logs laboratory procedures when completed, processes related paperwork using computer equipment as directed
  • Maintains examination rooms and stocks necessary medical supplies
  • Performs duties to ensure good patient flow
  • Accompanies the provider to the bedside
  • Performs tasks to improve provider efficiency during the course of a shift
  • Document the provider dictated patient history including history of present illness, review of systems, past medical and surgical history, family and social histories, medications and allergies
  • Document patient medical history, physical examination findings, and procedures as performed by the provider
  • Committed to the specialty of Urgent Care, with a focus on serving our communities with quick, convenient and quality care with continued clinical and patient experience training
  • Explain to patients what insurances that are accepted and those that are out of network as well knowledgeable of all pricing
  • Greets patients and completes registration process in a timely manner
  • Answers and appropriately triages phone calls
  • Collects patient responsibility for visits
  • Printing, scanning, and faxing reports
  • Cleaning of the clinic before, during, and after shift
  • Ensures accurate completion and timely scanning of all required Occupational Medicine documentation into the EMR system, maintaining compliance with company protocols and regulatory standards
  • Completes various Occupational Medicine testing: Urine Drug Screens, Breath Alcohol Testing, Hair Collection Drug Screens, DOT & Non-DOT Physicals, Vision and Audio Testing, Pulmonary Function Testing, Audiograms
Requirements
  • 6+ months of experience as a Patient Care Technician or similar role; OR equivalent education/certification in a related healthcare specialty
  • Preferred experience in Urgent Care, Occupational Medicine, and/or Phlebotomy
  • Ability to identify equipment problems and correcting or notifying team leader
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, patients, and families
  • Computer knowledge and skills, must be able to register patients on the computer in a timely manner; including use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
  • Ability to complete and maintain CPR certification
  • Excellent listening and note-taking skills
  • Ability to apply written instructions and standardize work practices
  • Strong communication skills, including grammatical, spelling and verbal
  • Detail-oriented with proven ability to work effectively under conditions requiring accuracy
  • Capable of working well on a team
  • Friendly and customer service oriented
  • Ability to manage high call and patient volume
