Job summary

HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital in Charleston, SC, is seeking a PRN Patient Care Technician to join a 12-hour shift rotation on the MedSurg Neuro unit. The role supports RNs with hands-on care, vital signs, mobility, and patient comfort, covering vacations, leaves, and additional staffing needs.

Required: CNA license in SC preferred, BLS certification within 30 days, and up to 1 year of acute care experience. Training on safety and infection control will be provided as needed.

Qualifications

  • Licensed CNA in South Carolina preferred.
  • A current BLS Health Care Provider certification is required or obtained within 30 days.
  • 1 year of acute/hospital experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain vital signs, height/weight, intake/output, calorie counts and simple dressings.
  • Answer call lights promptly and respond to patient needs.
  • Assist with activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, meals and mobility.
  • Ensure safe patient handling, transfers, positioning, and use of assistive devices.
  • Document information in the patient’s medical records.
  • Communicate changes in care with physicians and nurses.
  • Educate patients and families on care plans and therapies.
  • Maintain unit supply levels and restock as needed.
  • Keep patient areas clean, organized, and stocked for safety.

Do you have the PRN career opportunities as a Patient Care Tech you want with your current employer? We have an exciting opportunity for you to join HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital which is part of the nation's leading provider of healthcare services, HCA Healthcare.

This position will be as needed to cover vacations, extended leaves, call-outs, and if we need extra staff on hand due to patient flow. The shifts are 12 hours and can be 7a to 7p or 7p to 7a, any day of the week including weekends.

The position in on our MedSurg Neuro unit.

Job Summary And Qualifications

As a Patient Care Technician (PCT), you will be a vital part of our collaborative nursing team, supporting Registered Nurses in providing hands‑on care and helping create a safe, welcoming environment for patients. You will assist with daily needs such as vital signs, mobility, and personal care, while helping RNs monitor conditions and carry out care plans. Your attention, empathy, and teamwork help restore comfort and dignity for every patient you serve and make our mission to improve lives a reality each day.

Responsibilities
  • Obtaining vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, calorie counts, application of ice/heat, and/or simple non-sterile dressing changes.
  • Answering patient call lights in a timely manner and respond to patient needs/requests.
  • Assisting patients with performing activities of daily living to include bathing, shaving, oral care, toileting, grooming, changing linens, providing water, ambulating, assisting with meal delivery and feeding as directed.
  • You will be responsible for safe patient handling: Turning and positioning, use of specialty beds, patient transfer and use of transfer devices, ambulation assistance and use of assistive devices, restraint alternatives, oxygen use and transport, suction use, pre-operative skin preparation and/or use of sequential compression devices (SCD).
  • Recording information in the patient’s medical records
  • Communicating with physicians, nurses and other healthcare team members regarding changes in a patient’s care and condition.
  • Educating patients and families on the care and therapies being provided, in conjunction with physicians and nurses.
  • Monitoring supply levels in your unit and patient rooms and restock as needed
  • Providing non-medicated care such as dressing changes, skin protection, and use of supportive devices
  • Keeping patient areas and common spaces clean, organized, and stocked to maintain safety and efficiency
  • Managing supplies, equipment, and logs to support infection control and team readiness
Qualifications
  • Licensed as a CNA in South Carolina preferred
  • RN Nursing School Students may be considered.
  • A current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider is required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • 1 year of acute/hospital experience is preferred
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date
