Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is hiring a Patient Care Tech for 12-hour Day shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM) with rotating weekends and holidays. This role supports RN/LPN staff by delivering direct patient care, assisting with activities of daily living, and performing routine measurements and specimen handling.

Minimum age 16, BLS certification within six weeks of hire, and mandatory reporting training within three months are required.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years of age.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three months of hire.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification within six weeks of hire.

Responsibilities

• Delivers assigned patient care and treatment as delegated by an RN or LPN.
• Performs or assists patients with activities including personal hygiene, bathing, ambulation, transporting, range of motion exercises, dressing/undressing, feeding, changing bandages, elimination needs, and emptying drainage devices.
• Responds to patient calls and anticipates patient needs. Ensures patient safety and comfort through safe patient handling techniques, regular rounding, environmental maintenance, equipment maintenance, and other safety measures.
• Calculates intake and output (excluding IVs). Measures vital signs. Performs bedside blood glucose testing. Documents patient health records as required by policy.
• Initiates or assists with emergency measures (CPR, protecting patient from injury).
• Performs post-mortem care. Sets up equipment and supplies for procedures. Prepares patients and rooms for procedures, admissions, and transfers. Discharges patients from the system.
• Observes and reports changes in patient condition to the nurse.
• Collects and labels specimens. Sets up, operates, and maintains equipment.
