Description:
The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is responsible for direct patient care tasks as assigned and under the supervision of professional nursing personnel. They also provide indirect care to maintain unit functions as directed by the professional nursing staff, such as caring for and cleaning specific equipment, transporting patients, stocking supplies and equipment, etc.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Completing admissions according to policy (room setup, vital signs, orientation, etc.)
  2. Prioritizing and organizing work assignments, adjusting priorities based on changing situations in conjunction with licensed nursing personnel.
  3. Completing work within the assigned time frame.
  4. Monitoring patient condition and potential risk factors per policy.
  5. Recognizing and addressing patient special needs and individualizing care, including pain management and supportive care.
  6. Assuming accountability for the delivery of patient care within the scope of the nursing assistant role.
  7. Learning and communicating policies and nursing procedures applicable to nursing assistants.
  8. Demonstrating attributes necessary to function as a team member, such as answering call lights promptly and courteously.
  9. Providing a conducive environment for educational experiences for nursing students and new employees, including functioning as a preceptor when necessary.
  10. Understanding the role of Nursing Assistant based on hospital policy and State Board regulations.
  11. Utilizing information management systems (e.g., Meditech) to enhance communication.
  12. Communicating changes in patient condition and transfer of responsibility effectively.
  13. Cooperating with all hospital areas during patient admission and transfer to ensure efficiency.
  14. Updating licensed nursing staff regularly throughout the shift.
  15. Maintaining fall risk precautions and interventions.
  16. Running errands as needed.
